Veterinary Technician

Job Summary

The Veterinary Technician will provide high-level medical support to the Veterinarian, performing advanced clinical tasks, assisting in surgery, and ensuring that all patients receive exceptional medical care and monitoring. As a vital bridge between our medical team and pet parents, you will also deliver compassionate, high-level client communication, ensuring families are educated, supported, and experience the exceptional care that defines the Upleash Veterinary Hospital brand.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance and technical training to Veterinary Assistants and Kennel Assistants.
  • Oversee the medical workflow in the treatment area to ensure patients are seen in a timely manner.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assist the Veterinarian in outpatient exams by gathering patient history, obtaining vital signs, and preparing vaccines or treatments.
  • Perform clinical laboratory procedures including blood draws, urinalysis, fecal exams, ear cytology, and skin scrapings.
  • Induces and monitors general anesthesia for surgical patients, ensuring all vitals are recorded and the patient in stable.
  • Perform dental prophylaxis (cleanings) and take digital dental radiographs.
  • Administer medications via oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous routes as directed by the Veterinarian.
  • Place and maintain intravenous (IV) catheters and fluid therapy.
  • Position patients for and capture diagnostic digital X-rays while following personal protections and safety protocols.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed electronic medical records (EMR) for all patient visits and treatments.
  • Educate clients on various aspects of pet health, including nutrition, preventative care, and post-operative instructions.
  • Ensure the treatment area, pharmacy, and surgical suite are stocked, sterile, and ready for use.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Proficient in animal restraint techniques for various species and temperaments.
  • Strong knowledge of veterinary pharmacology, medical terminology, and surgical nursing.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with both the medical team and clients.
  • Excellent organizational skills and extreme attention to detail, especially regarding dosage calculations.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced, high-pressure, and at times stressful environment (including emergencies).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to monitor patient health changes during procedures.
  • Aptitude for learning Veterinary Practice Management Software (Instinct) and digital imaging software.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology preferred.
  • Current State License (LVT, RVT, or CVT) is highly preferred but may consider highly experienced non-credentialed technicians.
  • At least two years of experience in a clinical veterinary setting are required.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, and kneeling.
  • Must be able to lift and carry animals or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds independently.
  • Ability to handle the physical demands of restraining fractious or large animals.
  • Exposure to animal dander, cleaning chemicals, and sharp objects (needles/scalpel).
